Not every electrical issue is an emergency, but several warning signs should never be ignored. A burning or fishy smell near an outlet, switch, or your main panel often means something is overheating behind the wall. Sparks, smoke, or scorch marks around a receptacle or breaker box call for immediate attention. A panel that feels warm to the touch or makes a buzzing, humming, or crackling sound is another clear signal that something is wrong.
Water is a serious concern as well. If flooding, a burst pipe, or a leak reaches your wiring or electrical panel, your whole system becomes a shock and fire hazard, so you should shut off power at the main if you can do so safely. You should also treat exposed, frayed, or damaged wiring as live and keep everyone away from it. And if your home loses power while your neighbors still have electricity, the problem is usually on your side of the system and worth a professional look.
If you notice any of these signs, it is better to call than to wait and hope the problem goes away on its own.
